More Companies Pitch In for Worker Housing

Hospitals, universities, and other employers increasingly are offering financial assistance to employees to help them achieve homeownership or make home improvements.

Employer-assisted housing programs first emerged in the 1970s as a means for businesses to revitalize struggling neighborhoods and protect their investments in these areas, says Phil Hardwick of Mississippi State University's John C. Stennis Institute of Government.

It has been nearly 10 years, meanwhile, since the University of Pennsylvania began providing up to $7,500 in down payment or repair assistance to full-time staff, who do not have to repay the loans if they keep their jobs for five years or more.

Similar programs are offered in Jackson, Miss., by Jackson State University and St. Dominic/Jackson Memorial Hospital, among others.
